How to choose the right laptop charger?

Identification of laptop model and specifications

Locate the identification label
Most laptops have an identification label located on the bottom of the case or under the battery. This label often includes important information such as the serial number, specifications, as well as the required voltage (V), current (A), and sometimes power (W).

Use the Operating System
You can also find information about your laptop model within the Operating System. For example, on Windows, you can do this by typing System Information in the Start menu and looking for the model name in the System Summary section. Once you have the model name, you can search for it online with keywords like manual or technical specifications. The resulting pages should provide detailed information needed when purchasing a charger.

Laptop chargers - selecting the right specification

Nominal Voltage (V)
This is one of the most important values to pay attention to. The output voltage of the charger must exactly match the voltage required by the laptop. Using a power supply with the wrong voltage can lead to damage to the laptop.

Current (A)
A charger with a higher current rating than required by the laptop is safer. However, the current rating should never be lower than what is required. Lower current may result in insufficient charging or even damage to the device.

Power (W)
The power of the laptop charger, expressed in watts, is the product of voltage and current. When choosing an adapter, ensure that its power is at least equal to the power required by the laptop.


Finding the right plug type

Identify the laptop's plug type

Most laptop models may require a specific type of plug, such as round, rectangular, MagSafe and MagSafe 2 for Apple products, or even universal notebook adapters compatible with devices that allow charging via a USB-C. Make sure you know the exact type and size of the plug.

How to measure the plug?
If you have access to a caliper, use it to measure the outer and inner diameter of the charger plug. These measurements will help you find a laptop adapter with a properly fitting plug.
